Within the US Intelligence community, there are certain groups of men who complete Special Operations Missions. These SPEC OPS elements are required for covert direct actions. They specialize in paramilitary warfare, weapons, explosives, combat infiltration and escape, counter insurgence, drug interdiction, rescue and recovery, etc.

Special Ops personnel may be authorized to take direct action on specific targets known as Executive Action. They often spend most of their days and nights in the field, many times with indigenous personnel, tribal chiefs, or just out there all alone on a mission, in a place not even marked on a map. They are a breed apart. The men who don't fit in. Close friends may call them contractors, case officers, or Spooks. These operators rarely, if ever, get any public recognition, since their training and operations are invariably Top Secret. Many of these operators come from the military special operations community, such as Seal Teams, DELTA, Airborne Rangers, Force Recon, Combat Swimmers, PJ's, Scout Snipers, etc. They are individually selected for their specialized high degree of skills.
