The Rocky Mountain Spike is a result of several months of testing and fine-tuning in the field. The development of the Rocky Mountain Spike is a coordinated effort of a special something that can apply itself to almost any situation. The original design was to be a sidekick or an add-on to a big knife, like a TOPS Machete or a Power Eagle, to give the user a variety of other applications on smaller projects. The size and heavy duty mass of steel in the big knives certainly have their place. However, every so often the situation arises where you wish you had a smaller knife, and specifically one with a narrow blade.

After using and abusing the prototypes in the field, those that tested the Rocky Mountain spike saw a wide variety of cutting, scraping, splitting, EDC, and separating tasks this tool could be used for effectively.

Now we feel the Rocky Mountain Spike is very much a great stand-alone tool (as well as a companion to large knives) for hikers, bikers, campers, boaters, weekend outdoorsmen, and long trekkers. It can be worn on your belt or pack, in your boot, or damn near any other practical place you want it. Whether you're thinking self-defense or general outdoor activities, at work or at home, this is the tool for you.

Each of these tools are individually, differentially heat-treated to perfection. You can actually see the heat treat line near the edge of the blade thanks to Leo "The Lion" Espinoza's now famous Black River Wash process. Using a variation of that process, we've created a new finish we call SANDSTORM BRONZE.

The finger grooved handle allows for a sure grip. This lean, manly tool will make an excellent travel companion for all who choose to carry it.

Low profile backup with real tool capability.
I recently purchased the spike through an authorized TOPs dealer. This is a really neat hardcore knife! The finish is awesome, as well as the visible temper line. The leather sheath is top quality, no messy stitching or loose areas, clean black leather. Well made. Simple.

Knife retention is snug. I like the fact that the sheath hugs the knife all the way up, with just enough exposed handle to draw easily. The knife stays put even when the sheath is inverted & aggresively shaken & whipped around. The cord lanyard helps draw the blade if it is worn in deep cargo pockets. The tip of this thing is clearly made for penetration, a fat little clip-point. The steel is thick and appears to be fully flat ground. Mine came just shy of shaving sharp, more than sharp enough! It is a tough thing for a manufacturer to put a mega sharp edge on a thick & narrow blade. TOPs has succeeded, they have been doing this a very long time. I appreciate that they don't use wasteful packaging. No box to store or recycle, just a thick heat sealed poly bag containing the knife, in the sheath, with some paperwork and the survival whistle. This is my 5th Tops knife and probably my favorite, just behind Johnny Tsai's CUMA Evolution. Concealability is a plus. The Spike is low profile on a belt, and will be lashed to my camping/bugout bag this summer.

I haven't had any corrosion issues at all. I coated the whole thing with Sentry Tuff Glide to further protect the exposed edge & logo etching. If you take care of 1095 carbon steel, it'll take care of you!! Some may wish to fully wrap the handle in paracord once their sheath has stretched a bit, but I left mine unwrapped to keep it simple. I have used the RM Spike as a camp steak knife & shaved fuzz sticks for fire making. It has been batonned through small kindling when my hatchet was in use by another camper. Tough tough knife!

All of my friends who are into the outdoors love this knife. I will buy another one for my parents to keep in their RV for utility and concealed carry.

1095 is a TOUGH steel and Tops' heat treatment is excellent. This is a knife that can take real use and abuse. Weapon potential: I don't ever feel under-armed with this, and it complements my Filipino Eskrima knife training. The sheath isn't ideal for defensive carry, because this is primarily an outdoor blade. But it is a born thruster/stabber! The tip style and edge grind penetrate very well.

A very simple knife at a reasonable price. If it were offered in a cerakote finish for a little more money, I'd get another one. Good stuff.
